TAEKWONDO FACTS

Tae means foot. Kwon means hand. Do means discipline.

The Korean flag white background is a traditional Korean color. It represents peace and purity. The circle in the middle is derived from the philosophy of yin and yang and represents the balance of the universe.

Taekwondo first appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. On September 4, 1994 during the 103rd IOC Session in Paris, taekwondo was accepted as an official medal sports for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Taekwondo ranks are typically separated into "junior" and "senior" sections.
